Children’s book illustrations provide your kid with a world to envision when reading their books. And while they’re brilliant at adding to the story and making it more exciting, you can also help bring picture books to life! I am a strong believer in reading to your child. Reading to him or her every day, in my opinion, is one of the best things you can do as a parent to inspire a love of reading in your kids.
In addition to reading aloud to your kids, there are many ways you can bring the stories to life. By doing this, you increase the excitement with your kids.
In turn, kids are more likely to engage in the story and are more likely to pick the book up themselves the next time.
We like to bring stories to life with hands-on activities and printables based on specific books we’re reading or have read. Not only do they bring the story to life, but they offer an opportunity to introduce or reinforce other concepts you’re working on with your children.

Bring Your Favorite Picture Books to Life
The Mitten
A great place to start is with The Mitten by Jan Brett. The story follows Nicki, his mitten, and a group of animals looking for a warm place to rest. The images and the story line will have your young readers engaged from the first page.
Afterward, though, preschoolers will love using the images in this printable pack to retell the story over and over again. They’ll also work on their motor skills as they lace up a mitten of their own. These printables bring picture books to life for your child!
Dr. Seuss
This 17-page Dr. Seuss preschool learning pack is designed to engage young Dr. Seuss fans. They are not based on any specific Dr. Seuss book so you can print these out to go along with your little one’s favorite book. With Dr. Seuss’s birthday coming up in March, now’s the perfect time for this learning pack.
The Enormous Turnip
The Enormous Turnip is a great picture book that teaches kids the importance of teamwork and the awe of unexpected surprises. After reading this book with your kids in grades K-2, print out the Enormous Turnip learning pack. In this pack, you’ll find cutouts for retelling the story, as well as activities that focus on ordinal numbers, antonyms and synonyms, parts of speech and more.
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
Laura Numeroff’s If You Give a Mouse a Cookie has become a childhood favorite for so many kids. The predictable text and the silly pictures grab kids’ attention from the beginning. After reading this picture book with your kiddos, introduce them to some fun activities from the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie Learning Pack. The activities in this printable focus on the alphabet, counting, handwriting and more.
When you bring picture books to life, you make learning fun! How do you keep your kids engaged in their favorite picture books while capitalizing on the natural learning opportunities presented in them?
